What SAP announced
SAP announced at SAP TechEd on 27 October 2026 a set of updates to Joule Studio, Joule Work and its Business AI Platform. Joule Studio is SAP's development environment for building and extending enterprise agents, with no-code and pro-code tools and a choice of more than 70 AI models.
The most practical change for automation teams is workflow support. Customers in the Joule Studio early adopter program can now design and run n8n workflows inside Joule Studio, with broader availability to follow. SAP also added observability and admin controls that show agent behaviour, model usage and spend.
On price, SAP is running a time-bound promotion: for select customers, deploying and running custom agents on the SAP-managed Joule Studio runtime stays free through December 2026. The design-time tools for building and testing agents and n8n workflows remain free under fair-use limits.
Governance and agent interoperability
Joule Work gets planning features that SAP calls agentic thinking, meant to orchestrate multistep workflows across SAP systems, and it uses the open Agent2Agent and Model Context Protocol standards. Third-party agents can now call Joule Agents through a governed agent gateway with enforced access control.
A new SAP Enterprise AI Gateway will route all AI traffic in a company through one place for authentication, policy enforcement, monitoring, usage tracking and auditing. SAP also announced an AI Governance Assistant to help customers meet EU AI Act requirements. CTO Philipp Herzig says SAP is "moving from AI learning your business to running it".
On data, SAP announced an Ontology Manager in SAP Business Data Cloud, a wider Databricks partnership and lakehouse support built with Dremio. Its tabular model SAP-RPT-2.0 adds anomaly and outlier detection, and SAP-RPT is set to run on HPE's Spaceborne Computer-2 on the International Space Station.
What changed for automation teams
At SAP Connect three weeks earlier, SAP launched the Joule Work rollout and described Joule Studio. TechEd adds two practical pieces: a familiar workflow tool and a way to try agents without a new bill. Bringing n8n inside SAP's governed environment means teams that already use n8n for integrations can build next to their SAP data instead of outside it. n8n itself is mid-transition, with version 3.0 in beta, and SAP does not say which n8n version Joule Studio runs.
The free runtime is limited to select customers and ends in December 2026. SAP does not publish what custom agents will cost after that, which is the number finance teams will need before moving production workloads.
What to watch next
Watch for general availability of n8n in Joule Studio, a release date for the Enterprise AI Gateway, and Joule Studio pricing for 2027. More enterprise workflow news is under AI Automation.
