C.H. Robinson said on 26 October 2026 that it has extended its AI agents into freight forwarding. Agents have produced more than 80,000 ocean and air price quotes for more than 3,600 customers, cutting quote times from one to three days to two to three minutes. Agents now also handle ocean booking requests and U.S. customs documents, where time spent fell 23%. Staffing effects are not stated.

What C.H. Robinson announced

C.H. Robinson said on 26 October 2026 that it has launched AI agents for ocean shipping, air freight and customs brokerage. The logistics company already uses agents in trucking, which it brands Lean AI. Forwarding is harder: the company says a single shipping task can need more than a dozen agents working together.

The quoting agents are the most mature. They have produced more than 80,000 ocean and air price quotes for more than 3,600 customers. An air quote used to take a day and an ocean quote two to three days; now both take two to three minutes, the company says. Quoting started in 2025 for less-than-container-load ocean freight in the US and Canada and now covers full containers and air cargo for customers in Mexico, Europe, Latin America and Oceania. It is in pilot in China, with Southeast Asia, India, the Middle East and Africa due in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Bookings and customs

C.H. Robinson receives thousands of ocean booking requests a week. Chief technology officer Mike Neill says that after about 10 years of digital booking forms and data links, only about 5% of ocean and air booking requests were automated, because the bookings come from a customer's many suppliers rather than the customer. Booking agents went live in China in August, reach the rest of Asia in the fourth quarter and should be global in the first quarter of 2027.

In customs, agents split, classify and attach more than four dozen document types from shippers, carriers and government agencies, extract data and chase missing papers. Time spent has fallen 23% so far, letting customs brokers focus on validation and compliance.

Global forwarding president Mike Short gives an example: to price a shipment from Shanghai, one agent works out which of two ports the shipper means, while another checks the fees of 43 terminals daily so staff do not have to call them.

What changed and why it matters

Freight forwarding is document-heavy work across time zones, carriers and customs rules, and it has resisted earlier automation, as the 5% booking figure shows. A shift from days to minutes for quotes changes how shippers compare routes when plans change. The numbers are the company's own and come with no error rates or audit.

The release does not say how many staff work on these tasks or whether headcount changed. C.H. Robinson says it has 450 in-house software engineers and data scientists and has built hundreds of proprietary agents since 2023. What to watch next

The next milestones are quoting in Asia, the Middle East and Africa in the fourth quarter and global booking automation in the first quarter of 2027. More sector deployments are under AI in Industry.
