Google DeepMind announced Genie 4 on 27 October 2026. The world model generates interactive scenes in real time that users steer with keyboard controls and text prompts, and it is the first Genie model to generate audio natively, including dialogue. Gemini 3.8 Flash plans and checks each step in the loop. Genie 4 is a research preview for trusted testers, with Google AI Ultra subscribers and Gemini API partners next. No price was given.

Key facts

  • Announced: 27 October 2026 (Google DeepMind blog)
  • Access: research preview for trusted testers; waitlist in Project Genie
  • Next: Google AI Ultra subscribers in Project Genie and early access partners in the Gemini API and AI Studio
  • First real-time Genie model with native audio, including interactive dialogue
  • Gemini 3.8 Flash acts as a guiding agent that plans steps and checks frames
  • All generated video and audio carries SynthID watermarks; pricing not stated

What Google DeepMind announced

Google DeepMind announced Genie 4 on 27 October 2026 in a blog post by Raia Hadsell, Diego Rivas and Hang Qi. Genie 4 is a world model: it generates an interactive scene in real time and simulates what happens next when a user moves, prompts or sets an event in motion. Users navigate with standard keyboard controls and steer the scene with text, for example by changing the weather, moving the camera or adding a person.

DeepMind says Genie 4 is natively multimodal. It is the lab's first real-time world model to generate audio, from ambient sound such as wind or waves to characters who speak and react to the user. DeepMind also says Genie 4 improves photorealism, physics such as collisions and aerodynamics, and the way simulated people move. The earlier version, Genie 3, was published in August 2025.

How Gemini fits into the simulation

Genie 4 builds on the Gemini family. DeepMind says Gemini Omni anchors the look and behaviour of scenes in the real world, while other Gemini models keep the simulation coherent. In real time, Gemini 3.8 Flash works as a guiding agent: it watches the scene, breaks a goal into steps, checks incoming frames and adapts its plan when the user intervenes.

DeepMind also shows Gemini 4 Argon breaking a task into steps that are passed to Genie 4 as text captions while the simulation renders. In one example, the pair simulate Apptronik's Apollo humanoid robot playing checkers. DeepMind describes this mix of language reasoning and pixel-level simulation as a step toward hybrid world models.

Who can use it and with what limits

Genie 4 is rolling out as a research preview for trusted testers in creative industries, journalism, education, gaming and engineering. DeepMind says it will come to Google AI Ultra subscribers in Project Genie and to early access partners of the Gemini API and Google AI Studio, but gives no date and no price. A waitlist is open.

DeepMind is open about the limits. Visual details and object permanence can drift in longer sessions or after several prompt edits. Complex physical interactions, audio accuracy, legible text, spatial accuracy and long-term consistency are listed as active research areas. All video and audio from Genie 4 carry SynthID watermarks, and DeepMind says the model passed internal safety evaluations before the preview.

What to watch next

The open questions are the date for Ultra subscribers, API pricing, session length and output resolution, none of which the announcement states. For robotics teams, the Apollo example suggests DeepMind wants Genie as a training ground for robots and agents, and the gap between demo clips and long sessions will be the test. Other video and world model releases are listed under AI Models.
