What Ohio State and Google announced

The Ohio State University and Google Cloud announced a strategic partnership on 29 September 2026 covering research, campus technology access, the university's AI Fluency initiative and student services. The deal sets up an on-campus AI space in Ohio State's Innovation District that brings together Google Cloud engineers and collaborations with Google DeepMind. Ohio State describes it as one of the largest partnerships between Google Public Sector and any US university.

On the research side, university researchers get access to more than 200 AI models, AI-optimized supercomputing systems and Google DeepMind technology. The release names AlphaFold, Google Earth Engine and the agentic system AlphaEvolve. Ohio State is also part of an initial cohort of R1 institutions receiving enterprise access to Google's AI research agents through Gemini Enterprise, which the university says are meant to help researchers generate and test scientific hypotheses. A third project, Project SCARLET, is a human performance platform built with Ohio State Athletics that uses predictive models and computer vision across all 36 varsity sports.

What changes for students and staff

Through Google for Education, select students, faculty and staff will get Google Workspace for Education and Gemini Enterprise, and the partnership provides Gemini Enterprise and Gemini Notebook access campuswide. Ohio State will launch a 24/7 virtual assistant powered by Google Cloud AI, which it calls a student concierge, for academic advising, registrar services and career planning. A new Google Public Sector ambassador program will recruit Ohio State students to work alongside Google teams.

The university also says the collaboration will help modernize campus operations, including intelligent campus infrastructure and cybersecurity automation. President Ravi V. Bellamkonda said the partnership will accelerate research through the AI(X) Hub and strengthen the AI Fluency goals. Karen Dahut, CEO of Google Public Sector, called it one of Google's largest and most comprehensive education partnerships to date.

Why it matters

Most university AI deals announced so far give students a chat assistant. This one bundles three things that are usually bought separately: productivity licences, research compute with specialist science models, and an AI layer on student administration. That makes it closer to a campus-wide platform decision than a software licence, and it ties the university's research groups to one cloud provider's model catalogue.

The announcement leaves gaps. It does not say how many people count as select students, faculty and staff, when the student concierge goes live, how student data in advising and registrar tools will be handled, or what the deal costs. The scale claim is Ohio State's own and is not backed by a figure.

What to watch next

The open questions are the licence count, the launch date for the concierge and the first research projects run through the Innovation District space. Further deployments in schools, universities and the public sector are collected under AI in Industry.
